Regional Educational Symposium on “Investing in the teacher to enable education systems”

On the occasion of the World Teacher's Day, the Arab Educational Training Centre for Gulf States (AETCGS) and the Regional Center for Educational Planning (RCEP) came together to host a Regional Educational Symposium on 4 October 2023 in the Arab region. The central theme of the symposium was "Investing in the Teacher to Enable Educational Systems," shedding light on the pivotal role teachers play in shaping the future of education. The event, conducted via Zoom, brought together educators, policymakers, and experts from various fields to explore the transformative potential of investing in teachers.

On the occasion of the World Teacher's Day, the Arab Educational Training Centre for Gulf States (AETCGS) and the Regional Center for Educational Planning (RCEP) came together to host a Regional Educational Symposium on 4 October 2023 in the Arab region. The central theme of the symposium was "Investing in the Teacher to Enable Educational Systems", shedding light on the pivotal role teachers play in shaping the future of education. The event, conducted via Zoom, brought together educators, policymakers, and experts from various fields to explore the transformative potential of investing in teachers.

The symposium commenced with opening remarks by H.E. Dr Fatma Al-Maadheed, Director of AETCGS, and H.E. Mahra Al Mutaiwei, Director of the Regional Center for Educational Planning. Their speeches emphasized the significance of recognizing and nurturing the talents of teachers in our education systems.

Session 1 featured Mr Carlos Vargas Tamez, Chief of the Teacher Development Section at the Secretariat of the International Task Force on Teachers for Education 2030. He delved into the concept of building integrated systems to support teachers and its profound impact on the quality of learning. Professor David Pedder, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic of Emirates College of Advanced Education, discussed the tangible effects of investing in teachers on the overall quality of the education system.

In Session 2, Professor Low Ee Ling, Dean of Academic and Faculty Affairs at the National Institute of Education, elucidated the profound influence teachers have on the development of their students. Dr Wayne Holmes, Associate Professor specialized in learning sciences and innovation at the University College London, explored the critical role of Artificial Intelligence in education from a unique perspective.

The symposium reaffirmed the importance of investing in teachers as a means to revolutionize our educational systems. It was a testament to AETCGS and RCEP’s commitment to fostering positive change in education. The event's insights and discussions will undoubtedly guide future endeavors to empower educators and enhance the quality of education across the region.

In a related context, RCEP participated in the regional workshop on developing technical and vocational education to enhance youth employment opportunities, which was organized in October in cooperation between the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) and the Kuwaiti National Commission for Education, Science, and Culture. Director-General Al Mutaiwei presented a working paper on the roles of international and regional organizations and centers in supporting and developing technical and vocational education.
