يشكّل التعليم الركيزة الأساسية لكلٍّ من المساعي العالميّة والوطنية الهادفة إلى تحقيق التنمية المستدامة وحماية حقوق الإنسان وتعزيز السلام. ومع ذلك، يواجه العالم حاليًا أزمة تعليم بدأت منذ عدّة سنوات ويحاول تكييف أنظمة التعليم لتتماشى بشكلٍ فعّالٍ مع متطلبات عالمنا المتغير. خلال قمّة تحويل التعليم، تعهّدت حكومات أكثر من 130 دولةً باتخاذ إجراءات فورية لمواجهة هذه التحديات الملحّة. بدورهم في بيئة التعلم الرقمية المتطوّرة التي تجعل مهمة التعليم صعبة ومعقّدة.

في عام 2014، أعلنت الجمعيّة العامة للأمم المتحدة يوم 15 تموز/ يوليو يومًا عالميًّا لمهارات الشباب احتفاءً بالأهميّة الاستراتيجيّة لتزويد الشباب بالمهارات اللازمة لتوظيفهم ولتمكينهم من الحصول إلى العمل اللائق وإطلاقهم في مجال ريادة الأعمال والتنمية المستدامة.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools are being implemented at an unprecedented scale and pace, which raises important implications for education. In a recent paper, Stefania Giannini, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education, examines the potential opportunities and challenges presented by generative AI tools in the context of learning. The publication delves into the profound impact of digital revolutions and explores how generative AI technology can affect education.

UNESCO is making extensive efforts to implement a fully operational Education Management and Information System (EMIS) in Yemen, where the education sector has been severely affected by the protracted crisis. Presently, the UNESCO Multisectoral Regional Office in Beirut is making progress in implementing the complex system, with the intention of achieving tangible objectives. According to Marco Pasqualini, an Education Specialist at UNESCO Beirut, the objective is to build upon the accomplishments of previous years. The upcoming target is to establish a comprehensive education census for the entire country of Yemen by 2024-2025, marking the first since the conflict began.

A research project conducted in Oman in 2023, funded by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MoHERI), has shed light on the state of Global Citizenship Education (GCED) in Omani schools. Led by Dr Khalaf Marhoun al Abri from Sultan Qaboos University, the Omani researchers thoroughly examined the incorporation of global citizenship principles and concepts within the country's education policies.

UNESCO is leading a global campaign to promote lifelong learning. The campaign is called #ImALifelongLearner. The Summit for a New Global Financing Pact was held in France at the Palais Brongniart on 22-23 June 2023, bringing together heads of state and government, international organizations, and civil society representatives including the Arab world to discuss how to address the overlapping climate change, biodiversity, development challenges and help all countries achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. As an official partner of the Summit, UNESCO co-organised two official events on the financing of Education and Global public goods, an affiliated event on youth innovation, and hosted 10 official panel discussions at UNESCO headquarters.

During the 25th ceremony of The L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science International Awards, which recognizes exceptional women scientists, the Fondation L'Oréal and UNESCO awarded on 15 June 2023 a medal of honor and a financial reward to three researchers who have displayed remarkable courage, resilience, and dedication to science despite challenging professional and personal circumstances. The recipients of this prestigious recognition are Dr. Ann Al Sawoor from Iraq, Dr. Mursal Dawodi from Afghanistan and Dr. Marycelin Baba from Nigeria.
